CHAPTER-XII-YOGA OF DEVOTION (BHAKTI YOGA)(1-20)


1-12 Ways to realization of God
Arjun Uvacha
12.1.. evam satafyuktah ye
bhaktaih tvam paryupasate
ye cha api aksharam avyaktam
tesam ke yogavittamah

Arjuna asked:
Who has the better knowledge of Yoga among the devotees who constantly worship you in your forms and qualities and those who worship your form and propertyless shape?
Shri bhagavan uvacha
12.2. mayi avesha manaj ye
mam hiyuktah upasate
shradhya paraya upetah
shrashaya paraya upetah
te me yuktatamah matah
Sri Krishna said:
Those who constantly concentrate their mind in Me with full faith, worship My forms and qualities are best yogis in my opinion.
12.3. ye tu aksharam anivdeshyam
avyaktam pavyupasate
sanvatragam achinntayam cha
kutastham achalam dhruvam
12.4. saniyamma indriyagramam
senvatra sambudhayah
te pra pnuvanti mam
eva sarvabhuhite ratah
3, 4 Those, controlling all their senses, worship vigilantly unthinkable, unviewable still fully present every where, propertyless, stable, immovable, undestructible and unexpressible form such devoted persons even minded towards all, and favourable for doing good to all beings do attain Me.
12.5. kieshah adhiktarah tesam
avyakta sakta chetasam
avyakta hi gatih
duhkham dehvaddhih avapyate
That path of those who have set their mind attached to the Unmanifest is more difficult; for identification with the idea of Unmanifest is attained with difficulty that is centred in the physical body.
12.6. yetu sarvani karmanu mayi
samyastha mataparah
anyena eva yogana mam
dhyayantah upasate
But those who surrender all their action to Me and concentrate exclusively and worship Me.
12.7. tesham aham samuddharta
mrutya samsaratsagarat
bhavami nachirat partha
mayi aveshita chetasam
Arjun! Such persons are salvated by Me speedily from the ocean of death (the World).
12.8. mayi eva manah adhatsva
mayi buddhim nivesaya
nivasisyasi mayi eva atah
urdham na sanshayam.

Therefore, set your mind in Me, and enter your reasons in Me alone; thereafter you will abide in Me. There is no doubt about it.
12.9. athachittam samadhatum na
shankoshi mayi sthiram
abhyasyogena tatah mam
ichha aptum dhananjaya
Arjun! If you do not feel able enough to fix the mind steadily on Me, then crave to attain Me through the Yoga of practice.
12.10. abhyase api asamarthah
asi matparamah bhava
madartham api karmani
kurram siddhim avapyasyasi
If you are not able even to take to practice, Then be ready for performing action for Me; you will attain perfection even by performing actions for My sake.
12.11. atha etat api ashaktah
asi kurtum madyogam ashritah
sarva karma phalam tyagam
tatah kuru yatatmavan
If you are unable to do even this, then relinquish the fruits of all actions, controlling your mind and senses.
12.12. shreyah hi gyanam abhyasat
gyanat dhyanam vishisyate
dhyanat karmaphalatyagah
tyagat shantih anantaram

Knowledge is better than practice, meditation is better than knowledge and relinquishing the fruits of actions is even better to meditation; for absolute peace immediately follows from renquishment.
13-20 Identification of real devotees.
12.13. advesta sarvabhutanam
maitrah karunah eva cha
nirmamah nirahamkarah
samdukhsukhah kshami
12.14. santustah satatam yogi
satatma dhridhanischayah
mayiaprtrita manobudhih
yah madbhaktah sah me priyah

One who is free from malice towards all beings and friendly as well as kind, un attached, free from ego, equal for pleasure and pain, forgiving by nature, constantly satisfied, Yogi, who has controlled his body with firm resolution,dovoted his mind and intellect in Me that devotee of Mine is dear to Me.
12.15. yasmat na udvijate lokah
lokat na udvijate chayah
harsamarsabhayodvegaih muktah
yah sah cha me priyah
A person who is not a source of annoyance to any one and who is never annoyed by any being; who is free from pleasure and envy, perturbation and fear, he is dear to Me.
12.16. unpekshah shuchih dakshah
udasihan gatavyathah
sarvarambhaparityasi yah0
madbhaktah sah me priyah
One who has no requirements, pure, efficient, impartial, above all grievances and who has renounced the feeling of beginership in all acts, - such devotee is dear to Me.
12.17. yah na hrishyati na duesti
na shochati na kanchhati
shubhasubha parityasi
bhaktimanyah sa me priyah.

One who neither rejoices and envies, nor grievesa nor desires and who is above good and evil acts such devotee person is dear to Me.
12.18. samah shatrau cha mitre
cha tatha manapamanayah
shitosnasukhadukhesu
samah sangavivarjitah
12.19. tulyaninala stutih mauri
santutah yena kenachit
aniketah sthiranatih
bhaktinam me priyah narah

One for whom friend and foe, Honor and insult, heat and cold, pleasure and pain are equal and and he is free from attachment. He who takes praise and reproach alike, studious, satisfied with whatever is available for livlihood, without attachment to place and body and stable mind such devotee is dear to Me.
12.20. ye tu dhavmayamritam idam
yatha uktam paryupasate
shradhanah matparmah bhaktah
te ative me priyah
Those who are endowed with faith in Me and are devoted to Me this religious nectare as said above comply accordingly such devotees are very dear to me.

guhyam adhyatmasangyitam
yat tvaya uktam vachah
tena moha ayam vigatahmam

Arjuna said:
Just to bestow your kindness only upon me, whatever absolute secret spiritual words You have told that has destroyed my delusion.
11.2. bhavapyayam hi bhutanam
shrutam vistarashah maya
tvattah kamalpatraksha
mahatman api cha ouyayam

Shri Krishna! Because I have heard in detail an account of the evolution and destruction of all beings only from You and also heardYour immortal glory.
11.3. evam etat yatha atath
tvam atmanam parmeshwar
drustam icchami te rupam
aishwaryam purushottam.

Lord! You are precisely what You proclaim Yourself to be. But I want to see Your divine image.
11.4. manyase yadi tat shakyam
maya dristum iti prabho
yogeshwar tatah me tvam
darshaya atmanam avyayam

Sri Krisna! If You consider me capable of seeing it, then, reveal Your imperishable form to me.
Shri bhagavan uvacha
11.5. pashya me partha rupani
shatashah atha shahastrashah
nanavidhan divyani
nanavarna kritin cha
.
Shri Bhagvan said
Arjuna! Now look My multifarious different faces in so many types of hundreds and thousands divine forms.
11.6. pasya adityan vasun
rudran ashwinau marutah tatha
bahuni adristapurvani pashya
ashcharyani bharat

Arjun! Look, the twelve Adityas, eight Vasus, the eleven Rudras, the two Aswinikumars and the forty-nine Marudgans. See many more wonderful images you have never seen before.
11.7. ih ekastham jagat kritsnam
pashya adha sacharacharam
mama dehe gudakesha yat
cha anyat drustum icchasi.

Arjuna! Look now a part in this body of Mine the entire creation both animate and inanimate of this universe. Besides this look whatever more else you desire to see.
11.8. na tu mam shakyase drutum
anena eva svachashusha
divyam dadami te chakshuh
pashya me yogam aishwaram

But It is sure that you cannot see Me with these of your eyes; therefore I grant you the divine eyes through which you will be able to see My divine power of Yoga.
9-14 Description of the great view of GOD
Sanjaya uvacha
11.9. evam uktva tatah rajan
mahayogeshwarah harih
darshayamas parthaya
parmam rupain aishwaram

Sanjaya said:
After saying this Sri Krishna, the supreme Master of Yoga, , then revealed His absolute Almighty Supreme form to Arjuna.
11.10. anekava ktranayanam
anekaadbhutdavsharam
anekadivyabharanam
divyanekodhatayudham.
11.11. divyamalayamberdharam
divyagavdhanuleparam
survascharyamayam
devamantam vishwatonwkham

Shri Krishna revealed his devine shape full of all wonders, infinite and having faces on all sides, the Supreme Almighty possessing many mouths and eyes, so many types of wonderful views, so many divine ornaments, many divine weapons lifted on hands and possessing divine garlands on neck, wearing devine clothes, divine sandal and kumkum pastes on body and forehead.
11.12. divi suryasahtrashya
bhaveta yugapat uthita
yadi bhah sadrishi sa syat
bhasah tasya mahatmana

If there be the appearance of a thousand suns all at once in the sky, even that would hardly approach equality to the splendour of the Supreme Almightly God.
11.13. tatra ekastham jagat
kritsnam pravibhaktam anekadha
apashyata devadevasya
shabrire pandavah tada
Arjuna, then, saw in a place of the physique of that supreme Almighty, the whole universe with its manifold divisions.
11.14. tatah sah vishmayavista
hristaroma dhananjayah
pranamya shirsa devam
kritanjalih abhasat
Arjuna was full of wonder after looking the universal shape of the Supreme Almighty and with the hairs standing on end, bowed his head with joined palms to the Supreme universal shape of the Almighty Lord and addressed Him thus;
15-31 Arjun Pays prayers worshipping great view of GOD
Arjun uvacha
11.15. pashyami devan tav deva dehe
sarvan tatha bhutavisheshsanghan
brahmanamisham kamalasanastha
rishin cha sarvan urgan cha divyan.
Arjun Said
Bhagwan!, I am looking in Your body all the deities and multitudes of creatures, Brahma seated on a lotus-seat, Shanker, all sages and devine snakes.
11,16. anekabahudarvaktranetram
pashyami tvam sarvatah
anantrapam, na antam na madhyam
napunah tava adim pashyami vishwesharar-vishvarupa.

O lord of the universe in the form of universe! I am looking You endowed with numerous arms, bellies, faces and eyes and having infinite forms from all sides. I cannot see Your beginning, middle or end.
11.17. kiritinam gadinam chakrinam cha
tejorashim sarnatah diptimantam
pashyami tvam durnikshayam samantat
diptanalarkdhyutim aprameya

I am looking you endowed with a diadem, mace and circular weapon (Chakra). An aura of glory, shining lights all round, having a brilliance like blazing fire and sun, difficult to be viewed by eyes and immeasurable on all sides.
11.18. tvam aksharam parmam veditavyam
tvam ashya vishwasys param nidhanam
tvam avyayah shashwatadhavmagopta
sanatanastvam purusho mato me

You are the perfectly indestructible worthy of being realized; You are the ultimate resort of whole universe. You are the protector of eternal religion and I take You to be the eternal imperishable human Being.
11.19. anadimadhyantam anantaviryam
anantbahuk sashisaryanetram
dashyami tvam diptahutashvaktram
svajejasa vishvamidam tapantam

I am looking You one without a beginning, middle or end, possessing infinit prowess and endowed with numberless arms, having eyes like the moon and the sun with mouths blazing fire and heating the universe by Your radiance.
11.20. dhavaprithivyah idam antaram hi
vyaptam tvaya ekena dishah cha sarvah
dritna adbhutam rupam ugram tava idam
lokatrayam pravyathitam mahatman

O Krishna! The space between the heaven and the earth and all the sides are filled by You alone. Looking this marvellous, extreme form of Yours, all the three worlds are feeling greatly alarmed.
11.21. ami hi tam sursanghah vishanti
kechit bhitah pranjalayah grinanti
svasti iti uktva maharashisiddhasanghah
stuvanti tvam statibhih puspakalabhih

Those community of dieties are entering You; some of them are chanting Your names and glories with palms joined out of fear. Great sages and Siddhas are singinging best and best prayers like, 'Let there be peace and good'.
11.22. rudradiyah vasavah ye cha sadhyah
vishve ashwinau marutah cha usmapahcha
gandharvayakshasur siddhasanghah
vikchante tvam vismitah cha eva carve

The eleven Rudras, twelve Adityas, eight Vasus, Twelve Sadhyas, ten Viswedevas and the two Aswinikumaras, forty-nine Maruts, habitual of taking fresh hot food the Seven fore fathers and Gandharvas, Yakshas, Ashuras and community of Siddhas, all are looking at You utterly amazed.
11.23. rupam mahat te bahuvaktranetram
mahabaho bahubahurupadam
bahudaram bahudanstrakaralam
dristva lokah pravyathitah tatha aham

Krishna! Looking towards the vast and terrible jaws of Your great shape, possessing multiple faces and eyes, so many arms, thighs and feet and bellies, all beings are terrified; so am I.
11.24. nabhahsparsham diptam anekavarnam
vyaptanam diptavishalnetram
dristva hi tam pravyathitantaratma
dhritim na vindami shamam cha vishnau
Krishna! Because You have somany shining forms touching the sky means you are great from all sides, Your mouth is wide open and You have vast shining eyes. I am unable to attain peace and patience after looking You, for my inner self frightened.
11.25. danstrakaralani cha te mukhani
drastva eva kalanalasannibhani
disho na jane nalabhe cha charma
prasid devesh jagannivas


Krishna! Looking Your faces with fearful Jaws, like raging fire at the time of universal destruction, I am utterly confused in finding the sides and unable to attain peace; therefore, be kind.
11.26. amichatvam dritarastrasya putrah
sarve sah eva avanipalsanghaih
bhismah dronah sutputrahtatha asam
sah asmadiyaih api yodhamukhaih
11.27. vaktrani te trarmanah vishanti
danstrakaralani bhayankani
kechit vilagnah dashnamtareshu
sandrishyante churnitaih uttamangaih.

Bhisma, Drona and that Karna also with the principal warriors from our side are rushing headlong into You as well as all those sons of Dhrtarastra with hosts of kings are entering Your fearful mouths possessing terrible jaws with great speed; some of them are seen stuck up between teeth with their heads crushed.
11.28. yatha nadinam bahavah ambuvegah
samudram eva abhimukhah dravanti
tatha tavami narlokvira
vishanti vakranyabhivijvalanti

Like the multiple streams of rivers naturally rush towards the sea alone, so those great warriors of the world are entering Your blazing mouths from all sides.
11.29. yatha pradiptam jwalanam patanga
vishanti nashaya samriddhavegah
tathaive nashaya vishanti lokah
tava api vaktrani samriddhavegah

Attracted Like an insect which rush with great speed into the blazing fire for destruction, similarly all these people also are entering Your mouths for destruction with great speed.
11.30. lehihyase grasmanah samantat
lokan samgrah vadanaih jwaladbhih
tejobhih apurya jagat samagram
bhasah tava ugrah pratpanti vishnau

Krishna! You are licking all those people from all sides Swallowing through Your burning mouths and Your extreme light is emitting heat to the entire universe.
11.31. akhayahi me kah bhavan ugrarupah
namah astu te devavav prasid
vigyatumichhami bhavantam adhyam
na hi prajanam tava pravrittim
Krishna! Tell me who are You with such an extreme form? I pay obeisance to You. be kind. I wish to know You in substance, for I do not know you nature exactly.
32- 35 Krisna describes his origin as God and asks Arjun to fight the battle
Shribhagavan uvacha
11.32 kalah asmi lokakshayakrita pravidhah
lokan samahavtum in pravrittah
brite api tvami na bhavishyanti sarve
ye avasthitah pratyanikeshu yodhah
Sri Bhagavan said:
I am the inflamed Kaal (Time), the destroyer of the all the worlds. At this moment I am here to destroy all these pople. Even if you are not engaged in the war all those warriors standing against you will not survive.
11.33. tasmat tvam uttista yashah labhasva
jitna shatrun bhunjaskshva rajyam samriddham
maya eva ite ninitah purvameva
nimittamatram bhava sabyasanchin

Arjun! Therefore, rise for the war and get glory; conquering foes, enjoy the kingdom full of wealth and grains. All these warriors have already been killed by Me; you become only an instrument.
11.34. dronam cha bhismam cha jaidratham cha
kavnam tatha anyan api yodhaviran
maya hatan tvam jahima vyatisthah
yudhasva jetasi rane sapatnam

Kill Drona, Bhisma, Jayadratha, Karna and other brave warriors, who have already been killed by Me; do not fear. Fight, you will surely conquer the enemies in this war.
Sanjaya uvacha
11.35. etat shrutva vachanam kesavasya
kritanjalih vepamanah kiriti
namaskritva bhuyah eva ah krishnan
sagadgadam bhitbhitih pranamya

Sanjay said:
After hearing these words of Bhagavan Krishna, Arjuna tremblingly bowed to Him with joined palms, and bowing again in extreme fear spoke to Sri Krishna;
36-46 Arjun resumes prayer
Arjuna uvacha
11.36. sthane hrishikesha tava prakirtya
jagat prahrisyati anurajyate cha
rakshansi bhitani disho dravanti
sarve namasyanti cha siddhasangha
Arjuna said:
Krishna! Whole of this Universe is feelinfg happy and attaining love by chanting Your name, qualities and glory. Fearing from the chantings terrified Raksasas are fleeing in all the ten directions and all the Siddha communities are bowing to You. This is reasonable.
11.37. kasmat cha te na nameram mahatman
gariyase brahmanahapi adikartre
anant devesh jagannivas
tvam aksharam sat asat tataparam yat

Krishna! Why should Siddha communities not bow to You, who are the originator of Brahma yourself and Eternal, Lord of deities, Abode of universe and undestructible. You are that which is true(Sat) and that which is untrue (Asat), and also that which is beyond both.
11.38. tvam adidevah purushah puranah
tvam asya vishvasya param nidhanam
vetta asi vedhyam cha param cha dham
tvaya tantam vishvam anantrupa

Krishna! You are the begining Deity, the first human being and You are the ultimate resort of this universe and only You are the knower and the knowable and the supreme abode. It is You who pervade the universe.
11.39. vayuh yamah agnih varunah shasankah
prajapatin tvam prapritamah cha
namah namah te astu sahstrakritvah
punah cha bhuyopi namah te

You are Air (Wind-diety), Yam Raj (Diety of death), Fire (Fire-diety), Varun (Diety of water), Moon, Brahma and the father of Brahma himself. A thousand times Obeisance, obeisance to You and Obeisance to You, again and again.
11.40. namah purastat atha pristhatah
te namah astu te sarvatah
eva sarva anantuirya amitvikramah tvam
sarvam samaphosi tatah asi sarvah

Krishna! You are Lord of infinite prowess, my Obeisance to You from before and from behind. I pay my obeisance to You from all sides. You possess limitless might, maintain all ; therefore only You are everything.
11.41. sakha iti matva prasabham yat aktam
hey krishna hey yadava hey sakheti
ajanata mahimanam tavedam
maya pramadatpranayena vapi
11.42. yat cha avahasartham asanskritahesti
vihar saiyyashan bhojanesu
ikah athava api achyut tatsamksham
tat kshamaye tvam aham aprameyam

41, 42 Krishna! O Yadava! My friend! Recognising you to be my friend and unaware of Your’s this greatness, whatever I ignorantly with affection have expressed You pressingly (without thinking), and during simple pranks and joyous moments the way in which You have been oversighted by me while walking, sleeping or awakening, sitting or standing, dining or drinking and alone or amidst friends and family members etc. - I crave forgiveness for all that from You.
11.43. pita asi lokasya chara charasya
tvam asya pujyah cha guruh gariyan
na tvatsamah asti abhyadhikah kutah
lokatraye api apratimprabhav - amyah

O Krishna! You are the Father of this animate and inanimate creation in the world. You are adorable and also the greatest teacher of all the teachers. In all the three worlds there is none else equal to You; thenn how can anyone be superior?
11.44. tasmat pranamya pranidhaya kayam
prasadaye tvam ahamisham idyam
pita eva putrasya sakha eva sakhyuh
priyah priyayah arhasi deva sodhum

Therefore, You being entitled to be prayed as God, I seek Your blessings laying my body at Your feet and bowing low. Kindly condone my fault like father condones the faults of this son, a friend that of his friend and a husband that of his wife. You are competent to pardon my faults.
11.45. astapurram hrisitah asmi dristva
bhayena cha pravyathitam manah me
tadeva me darshaya devarupam
prasid devesh jagannivas

Krishna! I am feeling happy having seen that which was never seen before. At the same time my mind is aggrieved by fear. Therefore kindly be gracious and reveal the same divine form of peaceful Visnu.
11.46. kiritinam gadinam drustam aham tatha eva
ichhami tvami drustam aham tatha eva
tena eva rupena chaturbhujena
shahastrabaho bhava vishnamurte

Krishna! I want to see You adorned in the same form with a diadem on the head, and holding a mace and a charka meaning therby- with four arms. Appear again in the same four-armed Form.
47-50 Rare possibility to view universal image of God, Krisna
Assures frightened Arjun

Shri bhagavan uvacha
11.47. maya prasannen tava arjuna idam
rupam param darsitam atmayogat
tejormayam vishwam anantam adhyam
yat me tvadanyena na dristapurvam
The blessed Lord Said :

Shri Krishna Said
Arjuna! I have shown you My this supreme, shining, primal and infinite Universal Form , through My own power after being pleased with you, which was never seen before by anyone else.
11.48 na vedayagyadhyayanaih na cha
kriyabhih na tapabhih ugraih
avamrupah sakyah aham nriloke
drustam tvadanyena kurupravira
Arjuna! In this human world I may not be seen in this universal Form by anyone else other than you, either through the study of Vedas and rituals, sacrifices, or through gifts, , or extreme penances and through any acts.
11.49 ma te vyatha ma cha vimudhabhavah
drutva rupam ghoram idrik mam idam
vyapetbhih pritamanah punastvam
tadeva me rupamidam prapashya

You should not be aggrieved or perplexed by looking such a dreadful Form of Mine. Now be fearless and happy and look once again the same four armed Form of Mine.
Sanjaya uvacha
11.50. iti arjunam vasudevah tatha uktva
svakam rupam darsayamas bhuyah
ashwashyamas cha bhitam enam
bhutna punah saumyavapuh mahatma
Sanjaya said:
After speaking thus to Arjuna, Krishna again appeared in His own four-armed Form; and thereafter assuming a gentle appearance as human being, the great soul Sri Krishna consoled the frightened Arjuna.
51-55 Importance of and method to view the four armed God
Arjuna uvacha
11.51 dritva idam manusam rupam
tava saumyam janardana
idenim asmi samvrittah
sachetah prakritim gatah
Arjun Said
Sri Krishna! Now looking this gentle human form of Yours, I feel calm and normal self.
Shri Bhagavn uvacha
11.52 sudurdarsham idam rupam
istavanasi yat mam
devah api asya rupasya
nityam darshankanchhinah
Sri Bhagavan said:
The Form of Mine (with four arms) that you have viewed is extremely difficult to be availed. Even the deities are always eager to view this Form.
11.53 na aham vaideh na tapasah
na danena na cha ijjaya
shakyah evamridhih drustam
dristavanasi mam yatha
In whatever form you have seen me; neither through Vedas, nor by penance, nor by charity and by sacrifices may I be viewed as such.
11.54. bhaktva tu ananya shakyah
aham enambidhih arjuna
gyatam dristum cha tattvena
praveshtum cha paramtap

Arjun! I am only available in this form and known in substance and even entered into through exclusive devotion,
11.55. matkarmakrita matparamah
madbhaktah sangavarjitah
nirvairah sarvabhutesu yah
sah mam eti pandava
Arjuna! One whose actions are for Me, depends on Me and having no enmity with all beings, without attachment is affectionately devoted attains Me.

1-7 Importance of Knowing God’s glories

10.1. bhuyah eva mahabaho
shrinu me parmam vachah
yat te aham priyamanaya
yakshyani hitlemyayah
Sri Bhagavan said:
Arjuna! Once again hear My absolute words, which I will tell you for your welfare who loves me afterall.
10.2. na me viduh surganah
prabhavama na maharsayah
aham adih hi devenama
maharshinama cha sarvashah
Neither God nor the great sages know my appearance because I am the beginning of all he God and great sages.
10.3. yah mama ajam anadim
cha vetti lokamaheshwaram
asammudha sah martyeshu
sarvapapaih pramudhyate
Whoever knows and accepts Me without any doubt as unborm, without any beginning and Almighty in whole of the Universe, he is wise among human beings and he is released of all the sins.
10.4.buddhih gyanam asammohah
kshama satyama damah shamah
sukham duhkham bhavah abhavah
bhayam cha abhayam eva cha
10.5.ahimsa samata tustih tapah
danam yashah ayashah
bhavanti bhavah bhutanama
mattah eva prithagivadhah
Wisdom, knowledge, unattachment, forgivness, truth, discipline of senses and mind, Pleasure, sorrow, beginning and end, fear and fearless, non-violence, equanimity, satisfaction, susterity, charity, fame and disrepute,- all of these different and diverse feelings of creatures emanate from Me alone.
10.6.maharshyah sapta purve
chatvarah manavah tatha
madbhavah manasah jathah
yesham loke imah prajah
The seven great seers, the more ancient four Sanak etc. and all the fourteen Manus are product of my will and are all devoted to Me; of them all the creatures in the world were begotten.
10.7. etam vibhutim yogam cha
mama yah netti tattvatah
sah avikampena yogena
yujyate na atra sanshayah
One who knows in substance and accepts without doubt this combination and supernatural power of Mine he gets established in unwavering Devotion yoga; there is no doubt in this.
8.11 Devotion and its effects
10.8. aham sarvasya prabhavah
mattah sarvam pravartate
iti mattva bhajante mama
budhah bhavasamanvitah
I am the origin of all the creation in the world; every tendency in the world is due to Me; knowing thus the wise devotee respectfully loves and worship Me only.
10.9. machittah madgatpranah
bodhayantah parasparama
kathayantah cha mama nityam
tushyanti cha ramanti cha
Such devotees with their mind fixed on Me, lives dedicating to Me, enlightening talking mutually about My qualities and influences, they ever remain satisfied and take delight in Me.
10.10. tesham satatyuktanam
bhajatam pritipurvakam
dadami buddhiyogam tam
yena mam upayanti te
I confer Yoga of wisdom on those are ever united with Me and worshipping Me lovingly, , through which they attain Me.
10.11. tesam eva anukampartham
aham agyanajam tamah
nashayami atmabhavasthah
gyanadipena bhasvata

In order to shower My grace on those devotees, I, dwelling in their existence, dispel the darkness born of ignorance by the shining light of wisdom.
12-18 Arjun prays God and to tell the details

Arjuna said:
You are perfect Bramha and absolutely pure. You perpetual devine human, a first diety, unborn and existing everywhere; all the seers and celestial sages Narada, the sages Asita and Deval and Vyasa speak of You as such and likewise You Yourself proclaim this to me.
10.14. sarvam etat ritam manya
yat mam vadasi keshava
na hite bhagavan vyaktim
viduh devah na denavah
Krisna! I believe all that You are telling me as true. Neither the deities nor the demons are aware of Your appearance.
10.15. snayam eva atmana
atmanam vetath tvam purushottam
bhutabhavan bhutesh
denadeva jagatapate.

You are creator of all beings, Ruler of all the creature, God of all the deities, the Lord of the universe and supreme Purusha. You Yourself only know Yourself .
10.16. vaktum arhasi ashesena
divyah hi atmavibhutayah
yabhih vibhutibih lokan
imam tvam vyapya tisthasi
Therefore You alone can describe Your divine glories in full details whereby You are involved prevading these worlds.
10.17. katham vidyam aham yogin
tvam sada parichintayan
kesu kesu cha bhavesu
chintayah asi bhagavan maya
Yogi! Contantly keeping you in my mind how can I know You? And in how many particular forms You should be kept in mind by me?
10.18.vistarena atmanah yogam
vibhutim cha janardan
bhuyah kathaya triptih hi
shrinvatah na asti me amritam
Krisna! Tell me once again Your Yoga power and glories in detail, for I feel no satiety hearing Your nectarean words.

Sri Bhagavan said:
Arjuna! Okay, I shall tell you My divine glories in substance; for there is no end of the expansion of My glories.

sarva bhutashayah stittah
aham adih cha madhyam cha
bhutanam antah eva cha
Arjuna! I am the soul situated in the inner heart of all the creatures and I am the beginning, middle and also the end of all beings.
10.21. adityanam aham vishruh
jyotisham ravih anshuman
marichih marutam asmi
nakshatranam ahavi shashi.
I am Visnu among the twelve sons of Aditi, the bright-rayed sun among the luminaries; I am the glory of the Maruts and the moon as king of stars.
10.22. vedanam samavedah asmi
devanam asmi vasavah
indriyanam manah cha asmi
bhutanan asmi chetna
I am the Saam Veda among the Vedas; Indra among the deities, among the senses, I am mind and consciousness in living beings.
10.23. rudranam shankarah cha asmi
vitleshah yaksharaksasam
vasinam pavakah cha asmi
meruh shikharinam aham
Among the Rudras I am Shankar and Kuber among the Yaksha- Rakshas. Amongh the Vasus I am fire and among the peaks of mountains, I am sumeru..

viddhi parth brihaspatim
senanim aham skandhah
sarsam asmi sagarah
Arjun! Know me in the image of Chief Among priests Vrihaspati, I am Kartikeya (Skand) among the Generals and among the water ponds I am the sea.
10.25. maharshinam Briguh aham
giram asmi ekam aksharam
yagyanam japayagyah asmi
sthavaranam himalayah
I am Bhrigu among the great seers, among speech, I am the monosyllabic Om. Among sacrifices, I am Jap (Constant repetition of His Name) among all the the sacrifices and among the stables I am the Himalaya.
10.26. ashvatha sarvabrikshanam
devarshinam cha naradah
gandharvanam chitra rathah
sidhhanam kapilo munih
Among all trees, I am the Aswattha (the holy PEEPAL tree); Narad among sages of deities, Chitraratha among the Gandharvas and among the perfects I am the sage Kapil.
10.27. ucchaihshravasam ashvanam
viddhi mam amritodbhavam
airavatam gajendranam
naranam cha naradhipatam
Among horses, know Me to be Uchchaihshrava appeared along with the Nectar of the ocean, Airavata among best elephants and among men know me the king.
10.28. ayudhanam dham vajram
dherunam aham kamadhuk
prajanah cha asmi kandarpah
sarpanam asmi vasuki
Among weapons I am the VAJRA; Kamdhenu among cows, I am the diety of sex for the cause of procreation and I am Vasuki among snakes.
10.29. ananthah cha asmi naganam
varunah yadasam aham
pitrinama aryama cha asmi
yamah sanyamtamaham
Among reptiles I am Ananta (Shesh Naag) and I am Varuna commander of aquatic creatures. Among the forefathers I am Aryama, and among discipline controllers I am YamRaj (the god of death).
10.30. prahaladah cha asmi daityanam
kalah kalayatam aham
mriganam cha mrigendrah aham
vamteyah cha pakshinam
Among the Daityas (demons) I am Prahlad; and among astronomers I am Time. Among animals I am the lion and among birds I am the Garuda .
10.31. pavanah pavatam asmi
rama shastrabhitam aham
jhasanam makarah cha asmi
shrotasam asmi janhvi
Among purifiers I am the air; among weapon holders, I am Ram. Among aquatic creatures I am the alligator; and among rivers, I am the Ganges.
10.32. sanganam adih antah cha
madhyam cha eva aham arjuna
adhyatna vidyanam vadah
pravadtam aham
Arjuna! I am the beginning, the middle and the end of all creations; I am the ascetic’s education among all the schools and logic among disputants.
10.33. aksaranam akarah asmi
dvandah samasikasya cha
aham eva akshayah kalah
dhata aham visvatomukhah
Among the vowels I am 'A' (the first letter of the alphabet) and in the composition I am Dwandwa Samaash. I am the endless Time and I am also the sustainer of all beings having My face on all sides.
10.34. mrituh sarvaharah cha aham
udbhavah cha bhavishyatam kirtih
shri vak cha narinam
smritih, medha dhritih kshama
Again, I am death that destroys all beings and I am also the source of future beings. Among women, I am the fame, honour, speech, memory, intelligence, steadfastness and forgiveness.
10.35. brihatsam tatha samanam
gayatri chhanda samaham
masanam margarshirshah aham
hritunama kusumakarah
Among the Shrutis (verbal Memoirs) in verses, I am Vrihatsaam and I am the Gayatri verse among all types of poem compositions. Among the twelve months I am Margasirsa (9th month of Hindu Calendar) and among seasons I am Spring.
10.36. dhyutam chalayatam asmi
tejah tejasvinam aham
jayah asmi vyavasayah
asmi sattvam sattva vatam aham
Among gamblers I am fraud and glory of the glorious. I am the victory of the victorious. I am the resolution of the resolute and I am the truth of the true-natured.
10.37. vrishninam vasudevah asmi
pandavanam dhanjayah
muninam api aham vyasah
kavindm ushana kavih
Among the members of the Vrisni clan, I am Shri Krisna and among Pandavas I am Arjun. Among the sages I am Ved Vyas; among the poets, I am the poet Shukracharya.
10.38. dandah damayatam asmi
nitih asmi jigisatam
maunam cha eva asmi guhyanam
gyanam gyanavatam aham
I am the policy for the persons aspiring victory and I am the rule of punishments for punishers. Of secrets, I am silence and I am the knowledge of the wise.
10.39. yat cha api sarva bhutanam
bijam tat aham arjuna
na tat asti vina yat
syat maya bhutam characharam
Arjuna! I am even the seed of all beings, for there is no creature, animate or inanimate, which may exist without Me.
10.40. na antah asti mam
divyanam vibhutinam paramtapa
aish tu uddeshatah proktah
vibhuteh vistarah maya
Arjuna! There is no end of My divine glories. This is only a brief and nominal description of the extent of My powers.
10.41. yat yat vibhutimat sativam
shrimat urjitam eva va
tat tat eva avagachha
tvam mam tejomshan bhavam
Every such creature and element which is glorious, brillant and powerful, know that to be a manifestation of a spark of My effulgence.
10.42. athava bahuna etena kim
gyatena tava arjuna
vistabhya aham idam kritsnam
ekanshena sthitah jagat

Arjun! Or, what is the need for you to know all this? When it is sufficient to say that I am holding this entire universe by a spark of My power.

Sri Bhagavan said:
I shall now describe properly the extremely secret science of faultless knowledge for you, knowing which you will attain salvation.

pavitram idam uttamam
pratakshavagamam dharmamya
susukham kartum avyayam

This science of knowledge is best of all teachings and a most secret of all the confidential. This is sacred, most excellent and its results are obvious. It is religious, imperishable and very easy to practice.
9.3. ashraddhanah purushah
dharmasya asya paramtap
aprapya mama vivartanta
mritya sansarvartmani

Arjuna! Persons having no faith in this religious duty, without attaining get repeated births and deaths in this world.
9,.4. maya tatam idam sarvam
jagat avayktamurtina
matsthani sarvabhutani na
cha aham tesu avasthitah
9.5. na cha matsthani bhutani
pashya me yogani aishwaram
bhootbhrit na cha bhutasthah
mama atma bhutbhawanah

Whole of this universe is within my indescribable shape. All the creatures are situated within Me, still I am not within them. And those creatures are not situated even within Me but look towards my divine Yoga capability. Though the creator of all the beings and sustainer of them but in fact I do not dwell in those creatures.
9.6. yatha akashsthitah nityam
vayuh sarvatragah mohan
tatha sarvani bhutani
matsthani iti updharaya
Just like air always remain in sky similarly all beings abide in Me.
7-10 Origin and end of Universe
9.7. sarvabhutani kaunteya
prakritim yanti mamikam
kalpakshaya punah tani
kalpadau visrijam aham

Arjuna! At the end of age of universe (a Kalpa) all beings attain My nature, and at the beginning of this universe, I create them again.
9.8. prakritim svam avastabhyah
visrijama punah punah
bhutagramam imam kritsnam
avastam prakriteh vashata
Controlling My Nature, I create them repeatedly at the beginning of the Universe this whole multitude of beings who are slave to the influence of their own nature.
9.9. na cha mama tani karmani
nibadhananti dhamamjaya
udaseenavat asinam
asaktam tesu karmasu
Arjuna! For those actions of creations, I remain un attached and indifferent. Therefore they do no bind me.
9.10. maya adhyakshena prakritih
suyate sacharacharam
hetuna anena kaunteya
jagat viparivartate
Arjuna! Nature under my superintendence creates whole universe and all beings and this is the reason the whole world transforms.
11-15 Demoniacal divine nature among human beings9.11. avajananti mama mudhah
manushim tanum ashritam
param bhavam ajanantah
mama bhutama heshwaram
Unwise people identifying Me as ordinary human being avoid Me, without knowing My supreme Godly nature.
9.12. moghashah moghakarmavah
moghagyanah vichetasah
Rakshasim asurima cha eva
prakritim mohinima shritah
The people who take refuge under fiendish, demoniacal, and attractive natures such unwise persons have vain hopes, futile actions and fruitless knowledge.
9.13. mahtmahah tumama partha
daivim prakritim ashritah
bhajanti ananya manasah
gyatva bhutadin avyayam
Arjun! The great souls who are dependents with undivided mind on divine nature worship Me knowing as the prime cause of all creations and imperishable.
9.14. satatam kirtiyantah mama
yatantah cha dhridhavratah
namaschyantaschya mama
bhaktya nityayuktah upasate
They regularly bowing and chanting My names with firm resolution worship Me through meditation.
9.15. gyanayagyena cha api anya
yajantah mama upasate
ekatvena prithaktvena
bahudha vishva tomukham
Other devotees (Jnanayogis) be take themselves concentrating on Me worship through their offering of knowledge, while still others worship Me in My Universal image of face all-around in many ways.
16- 19 God as soul of everything
9.16. aham kratah aham yagyah
svadha aham aham ausadham
mamtrah aham aham eva
ajyam aham agnih dhamhutam

I am the Vedic ritual, I am the sacrifice, I am the offering to the departed, I am the herbage; I am the sacred formula, I am the refined butter, I am the fire, and I am verily the set of offering oblations into the fire.
9.17. pita ahamasya jagatah
mata dhata pitamahah
vedhyam pavitram omkarah
rik, sama, yajuh eva cha

I am father, mother and grandfather of this universe, also knowledgeable and pious the sacred syllable Om, and the three Vedas - Rig,Saam and Yajuh.
9.18.. gatih bharta prabhuh sakshi
nivasah sharanam suhrita
prabhavah pralayah sthanam
nidhanam bijamavyayam
I am speed, sustainer, lord, witness, abode, refuge, good at heart, origin and end, place, store and also the imperishable seed.
9.19. tapami aham aham varsham
nigrihanami utsrijami cha
amritam cha eva rurituh cha
sat asat cha aham arjuna.

Arjuna! I radiate heat as the sun. I draw water and send in the shape of rains and showers. I am immortality as well as death; I am also true as well as an untrue.
20-25 consequences of worship with or without motive
9.20. traividhya mam somapah putapapa
yagyaih istva svargatim prarthayante
te punyam asadhya surendra lokam
ashranti divyan divi devbhogana
Those who perform action as per all the three Vedas with some motive, drinking the juice of Soma without any evil, worshipping Me through sacrifices seek access to heaven; they consequent to their good deeds attain Indra's place and enjoy the divine pleasures available to the Gods of heaven.
9.21. te tam bhuktva svargalokam vishalam
kshine punye martyalokam vishanti
evam traividharmam anuprapannah
atagatama kamakamah labhante
They after having enjoyed the pleasures of that extensive heaven world, return to this world of mortals on exhausting the stock of their good deeds. Thus adopting recourse to action with some motive as per the three Vedas, and seeking worldly enjoyments attain the repeated births and deaths.
9.22. ananyah chintayatah mama
yejanah paryupasate
tesam nityabhiyuktanama
yogkshemam nahayamyama
Those exclusive devotees constantly keeping Me in mind, worship me, I take care for protection of their yoga in securing that which could not be obtained and protect that has been obtained.
9.23. ye api anyadevatah bhaktah
yagante shradhaya abuitah
te up mama eva kaunteya
yajanti avidhipurvakam
Arjuna! Even the devotees who worship other Gods, endowed with faith, they too worship Me, though not in accordance with prescribed procedure (i.e. they understand me different).
9.24. aham hih sarvayagyanama
bhokta cha prabhuh eva cha
natu mama abhijananti
tatlvena atah chavantiche
Because I am the enjoyer and also the Lord of all the sacrifices; but they do not know Me in substance and that is the reason of their fall.
9.25. yanti devavrata devan
pritanyanti pritavratah
bhutani yanti bhutejyah
yanti maddhajinah api mama
Whoever worship of Gods with motive attain the Gods; those who worship the spirits of forefathers attain them; those who adore the spirits reach the spirits but those whomever worship Me attain Me.
26-34 Devotion, Persons entitled for devotion
9.26. patram pushpam phalam toyam
yah me bhaktya prayachhati
tat aham bhaktyuphritam
ashnami prayatamanah
. Whosoever offers Me leaves, flowers, fruits or even water etc. with love, I accept that substance given by such concentrated devotee.
9.27. yat karoshi yat ashnasi
yat juhosi dadasi yat
yat tapasyasi kaunteya
tatkurusva madarpanam.
Arjuna! Whatever you do, eat, sacrifice, donate and, whatever you do by way of penance, offer it all for Me.
9.28. shubhashubh phalaih evam
mokshashe karmabandhanaih
sanyasyogayuktatma
vimuktah mama upaishyasi
Offering thus all the action for Me you will be released from the consequences of the Karma. Thus offering all actions including yourself for Me you will be freed and attain salvation.
9.29. samah ahavi sarvabhutesu na
me dveshyah asti na priyah
ye bhajanti tu mama bhaktya
mayi te su cha api aham
I am equal for all beings; No one is either My enemy or a dear to Me. But those who devoutly worship Me abide in Me, and I also live in them.
9.30. api cheta suducharah
bhajate mama ananyabhak
sadhuh eva sah mantavyah
samyak vyvasitah hi sah
Even the most delinquent worships Me with exclusive devotion, he too should be considered a saint; for he has rightly transformed himself.
9.31. kshipram bhavati dharmatma
shashvat shantim nigachhati
kaunteya prati janihi na me
bhaktah pranashyati
Arjun! He at once becomes virtuous and gets perpetual peace. Know it for certain that My devotee never falls.
9.32. mama hi partha vyapashritya
ye api shyuh papayonayah
striyo vaishyastatha shudrah
te apai yanti param gatim.
Arjuna! Women, Trading community, Shudras (those belonging to the service class), and even those born out of sinful acts exclusively taking refuge in Me, undoubtedly they too attain the salvation.
9.33. kim punah brahmanah punyah
bhaktah rajarshayah tatha
anityam asukham lokam
imam prapya bhajasva mama
What if the Brahmans involved in holy activities and royal sages devoted to worship of Almighty should attain salvation. Therefore, having secured such joyless and transient human body, you should worship Me.
9.34. manmanah bhava madbhaktah
madhyaji mama namskuru
mama eva ashyasi yuktva
evam atmanam mat parayanam
Be My devotee, fix your mind in Me, worship Me and make obeisance to Me; thus attaching yourself with Me and entirely depending on Me, you shall attain Me.

Sri Bhagavan said:
The absolute Indestructible is Brahma; Soul of life (the Jivatma) is called Adhyatma; and the discharge of duty to show the existence of creatures is called Karma (action).
8.4. adhibhutam kshrah bhavah
purushah cha adhidaivatam
adhiyagyah aham eva atra
dehe dehbhritama var
Arjun! All perishable matters are Adhibhuta; the Purusha (Brahma) is Adhidaiva; and in this body I Myself, dwell as the inner witness, am Adhiyagya.
8.5. anantakale cha mama eva
smaran muktva kalevarama
yah prayati sah madbhavam
yati na asti atra sanshayah

One who remembers Me even at the time of death, attains My state; there is no doubt about it.
8.6. yam yam ua api smaran bhanam
tyajati ante kalevaram
tam tam eva eti kaunteya
sada tadbhava bhavitah

Arjuna! Whoever at the time of his death leaves the body remembering whatever object, he attains that object.
8.7. tasmat sarvesu kalesu
mama anusmer yudhya cha
mayi arpitamanobuddhih
mama eva esyasi asanshayam

Arjun! Therefore think of Me at all times and also fight. Mind and reason thus dedicated to Me, you will certainly attain Me.
8-16 Worshiping Shapes, images and qualities and Consequences
8.8. abhyasa yogayuktena chetasa
nanya gamina
paramam purusham divyam
yati partha anuchintayana

Arjuna! One with his mind involved in practice of Yoga without thinking anyone else and is constantly engaged in contemplation of Supreme Devine Purusha, after death attains Him.
8.9. kavim puranam anushasitaram
anadhoh andhiyansam
anusmareta yah sarvasya
dhataram achintyarupam.

One who contemplates such an indescribable shape that knows every thing, eternal Being, the ruler of all, subtler than the subtle, the sustainer of all, beyond ignorance, shining like the sun and full of knowledge;
8.10. pranyankle manasa achalena
bhaktya yuktah yogabalena cha eva
bhruvoh madhe pranam aveshya
samyak sah tam param purusham upaiti divyam

That devoted person in last moment of his life with firm mind and force of yoga establishes his breath between his eyebrows attains that supreme divine Purusha.
8.11. yat aksharam vedavidah vadanti
vishanti yat yatayah vitaragh
yat ichhantah brahmacharyam charanti
tatle padam sangrahena pravakshaye

Wise persons knowing Veda say a term undestructible, the persons renouncing the worldly matters( VEETRAG YATI) get that and the devotees obey the rules of controlling senses of objects that supreme state I shall speak to you in brief.
8.12. sarva dvarani sanyamya
manah hridi niruddha cha
murdhagni adhaya atmanah pranam
asthitah yogadharanam
8.13. aum eti ekaksharam brahma
vyavaharam mama anusmaran
yah prayati tyajan deham she
yati parman gatim

Restraining all the media of perception, and concentrating the mind in the heart, and establishing breath in the brain thus duly remaining steadfast in Yogic concentration such a devotee when leaves the body and departs, reciting the one-syllable of Brahma I,e, “Om”, and remembering Me, attains the salvation.
8.14. ananyachetah satatam yah
mam smarati nityashah
tasya aham sulabhah partha
nityayuktasya yoginah

Arjuna! One who always constantly remembers Me with undivided mind, I am always available for that constant Yogi absorbed in Me.
8.15 mama upetya punarjanma
duhkhalayam ashvashatam
na apruvanti mahatmanah
sansiddhim parmam gatah

Great souls, attaining highest perfection and getting salvation, are no more subjected to rebirths, which is the house of sorrow and transitory by nature.
8.16 abrahmabhuvanat lokah
punravartinah arjuna
mama upetya tu kaunteya
punarjanma na vidhyate

16 Arjuna! All the worlds up to Bramhaloka (the abode of Brahma) are subject of recurrences. But, on attaining salvation there is no rebirth.
17-22 Importance of God element
8.17. sahastrayugaparyantam
ahah yat brahmano viduh
ratrim yugasahatrantam
te ahoratravidah janah

The persons who know Brahma's one day of four parts of his time division, and Brahma's night of four parts of his time division, they alone know the day and night of Bramha.
8.18 avyaktal uyaktayah sarvah
prabhavanti ahragame
ratrayagame praliyante
tatra eva avyaktasangyake

All embodied beings emanate from the Brahma's subtle body at the beginning of Brahma's day and at the beginning of his night, they merge in the same subtle body of Bramha.
8.19. bhutagramah saheva ayam
bhutva bhutva praliyate
hafrayagame avashah partha
prabhavati ahragame
.

Arjuna! All creatures thus born again and again under the compulsion of nature in the day time of Bramha and dissolve at the commencement of His night.
8.20 parah tasmat tu bhavah
anyah avyaktah avyaktat
sanatanah yah sah sarvesu
bhutesu nashyatsu na avinashyati
But different from that Unexpressed ( Subtle body of Bramha), there is yet another eternal Unexpressed supreme Divine substance, which does not perish even though all creatures perish.
8.21 avyatah aksharah iti uktah
tam ahuh parmam gatim
yam prapya na uivartante
tat dham parmam mama

This Unexpressed substance spoken of as the indestructible, the same has been called salvation, attaining which creatures do not return, that is My supreme Abode,
8.22. purushah sah parah partha
bhaktya labhyah tu ananya
yasya antahsthani bhutani
yen sarvam idam tatam

Arjuna! Thet supreme Purusha in whom all creatures reside, and by reason of whom all this world is in existence that supreme Purush is attainable only by exclusive Devotion.
23-28 Paths with light and dark
8.23. yatra kale tu anavritam
avritim cha eva yoginah
prayatah yauti tam kalam
vakshyami bharatarshabhah

Arjuna! I shall now discuss both the paths the stage of departing Yogi when he does not return and the stage of departure when they do return.
8.24. agnih jyotih ahah shuklah
shanmasah uttarayanam
tatra prayatah gachhanti
brahma brahma vidah janah

(Of the two paths) there is a path in which are located God controlling fire and the God presiding over day-time, the presiding God of bright fortnight, and the presiding God of time span of six months of the northward course of the sun, proceeding along it after death, Yogis, who have known Brahma, attain Bramha.
8.25. dhumah ratrih tatha krishnah
shanmasah dakshinayanam
tatra chandramasam jyotih
yogi prapya nivartate

Again, there is a path in which are located the God presiding over smoke, the God presiding over night, the God presiding over the dark fortnight, and the God presiding over six months of the southward course of the sun - such Yogi (devoted to action with a motive), taking to this path after death, attains the luster of the moon and returns.
8.26. shukla krishne gati hi ate
jagatah shashvate mate
ekaya yati anavritim
anyatha avartate punah

Because these two paths , the bright and the dark, are considered to be eternal and related to the worldly creatures. Proceeding through one of them, one attains the salvation from where there is no return; and proceeding by the another, one has to return.
8.27. na etc shriti partha janam
yogi muhyati kaschanah
tasmat sarveshu kaleshu
yogayaktah bhava arjuna


Arjun! Any yogi who knows both the paths never involves in attachment therefore establish yourself at all times in Yoga in the form of equanimity.
8.28. vedesu yagyesu tapalsu cha eva
danesu yat panyaphalam pradistam
atyeti tat sarvam idam viditva
yogi param sthanam upaiti cha adhyam

The devotee Yogi, knowing this subject, what ever the pious gains have been explained in Vedas, sacrifices, austerities and charities transcends all the pious gains and attains the salvation.

Bhagavan said:
Arjuna!, Your mind being attached to me, depending on me practicing yoga you will know undoubtedly my collective shape in whatever way you like; now listen in the same way.
7.2• gyanam te aham savigyanam
idam vakshyami aseshatah
yat gyatva na in aseshatah
anyat gyatavyam avashishyate

I will let you know this entire knowledge with science, having known which there will remain nothing to know on this subject.
7.3.• manushyanam sahtreshu
kaschita yatati siddhaye
yatatam api siddhanam kaschit
mama veti tafuatah.
`
One out of thousands of men attempts for salvation; of those Yogis, some rare one knows Me in reality.
7.4.• bhumih apah analah vaxuh
kham manah buddhih eva cha
ahamkarah iti eyam me
bhinna prakritih astadha
7.5.• apara iyam itah tu anyam
prakritim uiddhi me param
jivabhutam mahabaho yaya
idam dhavyate jagat

Arjun! Earth, water, fire, air, sky, mind, intellect and the ego - these constitute My eightfold worldly nature. Other than this nature, know My nature in the form of a creature by which the whole universe is sustained.
7.6.• etadhyonini bhutani
sarvani iti upadharayata
aham kritasnasya jagatah
prabhavah pralayah tatha
Know this that all living beings are born out of this. I am the beginning of the world as well as the end.
Arjuna! Understand that all creations are the product of both these natures and I am the beginning and end of the entire Universe.
7.7• mattah parataram na anyat
kinchit asti dhananjaya
mayi sarvam idam protam
sufre maniganah eva


Arjun! There is no reason and cause except Me, like clusters of yarn-beads formed by knots on a thread, similarly this whole Universe is all-around Me.
8-12 Presence of God in all objects as cause of action
7.8.• rasah aham apsu kunteya
prabha asmi sashi suryayoh
pranavah saruavedeshu shabdah
phe paurasham nrishuh


Arjuna! I am the taste in water and the aura of the moon and the sun; I am the syllable AUM in the Vedas, sound in sky, and manliness in human being.
7.9.• punah gandhah prithivyam cha
tejah cha asmi vibhavasau
jivanam sarvabhuteshu tapah
cha asmi tapasvishu

I am pure smell of the earth and heat in the fire; I am life in all creatures and discipline in ascetics.
7.10.• bijam manna sarvabhutanam
viddhi parth sanatanam
buddhih buddhimatama asmi
tejah tejasvinam aham

Arjuna! Know that I am the eternal seed of all creatures. I am the brain of the intelligent; the glory of the glorious.

7.11.• balam balwatan chahan
kamaraga vinarjitam
dharmavirudhah bhuteshu
kamah asmi bharatarshabhah

Arjuna! I am the might free from passion and attachment of the mighty and in all creatures I am the sex ( not opposed to religion).
7.12• ye cha eva satvikah bhavah
rajasah tamasah cha ye
mattach eva iti tani viddhi
na tu aham teshu te maxi.

Understand that all the Triguna ( Satvik, Rajsi and Tamsi) are due to me. But I am not in them and they are not in me.
13-19 Consequences of being devotees and non devotees of God.
7.13• tribhih gunamaih bhavaih
abhih sarvam idam jagat
mohitam na abhijanati
mama aibhyah param avyayam


The attachment with qualities of all the three properties ( Satva,Rajas and Tamas) prevents a creature to identify My imperishable existence.

7.14• daivi hi eisha gunamayi
mama maya duratyaya
mama eva ye prapadhante
mayam etam tarantite

For this qualitative illusion of Mine consisting of the properties (three Gunas) is extremely difficult to pass over; those, however, who take refuge in Me alone can cross it.
7.15• ha mama dushkritinah
mudhah prapadhante naradhamah
mayaya uphritagyanah asuram
bhavam ashritah



Those who have lost their wisdom by Maya( i.e. lust for worldly wealth), and who have embraced the demoniac senses, such fools and wretched men of evil deeds do not take refuge in Me.
7.16• chaturvidhah bhajante mama
janah skritinah arjuna
artah jigyasuh artharthi
gyani cha charatarshabh



Arjun! Four types of virtuous persons take refuge in Me, they are persons doing pious jobs and seek just worldly objects, the sufferer, the seeker for knowledge and the man of wisdom.
7.17• tesham gyani nitayuktah
ekabhaktih vishishyate
priyah hi gyaninah atyartham
aham sah cha mama priyah

Of these four the best is the person of wisdom who constantly worships Me with exclusive devotion. Because I am extremely dear to the wise man and he is extremely dear to Me.
7.18• udarah sarve eva etc gyani
tu atma eva me matam
asthitah sah hiyuktatma
mama eva anuttamama gatim

All aforesaid four are very noble, but the man of wisdom in my opinion is verily My own self; Because he is not separate from me and there is no superior state then this one. In this way is firmly established in me.
7.19• bahunam janmanam ante
gyanavan mama prapaddhate
vasudevah sarvam iti
sah mdhatma sudurlabhah

After so many births birth as human is last as such in this birth every thing is Almighty God. Thus a wise man who embraces Me that great soul is rarely available.
20-23 Other Messengers of God and devotion to them 7.20• kamaih taih-taij hritagyanah
prapadhyante anyaderatah
tam tam riyamam asthaya
prakrita niyatah svaya
The persons whose wisdom has been carried away by different desires and attachments, such persons being controlled by their own nature, worship other messengers of God adopting rules of conduct related to each.
7.21• yah yah yam yam tanum
bhaktah shradhya architum ichhati
tasya tasya achalam shraddham
tam eva viddhami aham

A devotee faithfully willing to worship any Messenger of God, I stabilize his faith in that very Messenger.
7.22• sah taya shraddhaya yuktah
tastya aradhanam ihate
labhate cha tatah kaman
movya eva vihitan hi tan

Endowed with such stable faith he worships that deity with fruits of desire and his desires are fulfilled, but that fulfillment of desire is also prescribed by Me.
7.23• antavat tu phalam tesham
tat bhavati alpamedhasam
devan devayajah yanti
madbhaktah yanti mama api.

But the fruit thus obtained through worship of these deities by these people of meager intelligence, however, is perishable. The worshippers of these deities attain these deities; whereas My devotees attain Me only.
24-30 Collective Shape of God, Knowledge and ignorance
7.24• avyaktam uyaktim apannam
manyante mama abuddhayah
puram bhavam ajanantah
mama avyayam arutlamam

Unwise person without knowing my absolute imperishable and perfect senses think of Me as if I maintain physical body like human being.
7.25• na aham prakashah sarvaya
yogamayasamavritah
mudhoayam na abhijanati
lokaha mama ajam avyayam
Such type and unwise class of human community do not recognize me correctly as imperishable and perpetual. therefore I do no reveal myself being fully covered by the Yogmaya.
7.26• veda aham samatitahi
vartamanani cha arjuna
bhavishyani cha bhutani
mama tu veda na kanchan
Arjuna! I know all creatures who existed in past and are in present as well as those that are yet to come yet; but none of them except a devotee knows Me.
7.27• ichhadvesha samutthena
dvandua mohena bharata
sarvabhutani sammoham
sarge yanti paramtap
Arjuna!, All the creature in this universe are becoming victim of repeated births and deaths due to conflicts of attachment and enmity born out of desire and hatered.
7.28• yesam tu antagatam papam
jananam punyakarmanam
te dvandua mohnirmukta
bhajante mama dhridhavratah

But whose sins have come to an end by their virtuous deeds, being freed from conflict and attachments, worship Me with a firmly.
7.29• jaramarum mokshaya mama
ashritya yatanti ye te
brahma tat viduh kritsanam
adhyatmam karma cha akhilam

Whoever, having taken refuge in Me, strive for salvation and exoneration from old age know that Brahma, perfect Adhyatma (the totality of Jivas or embodied souls) and the entire field of karma (action).
7.30• sadhibutadhidaitam mama
sadhiyagyam cha ye viduh
prayankale api cha mama
te vidah yuktachetasah

Whoever knows Me with My integral beings, comprising Adhibhuta (the field of matter), Adhidaiva (Brahma) and Adhiyagya (the Divinity dwelling in the heart of all beings as their witness), such persons who have possessed of a steadfast mind know Me only even at the hour of death and attains Me.

LOTUS GITA-CHAPTER-VI- SELF CONTROL

CHAPTER-VI- SELF CONTROL (1-47)

Chapter – VI
1-4. Identification of persons involved with Yoga and Karmyoga detailed.
6.1. anashvitah karma phalam
karyam karma karoti yah
sah sanyasi cha yogi cha na
niragnih ha cha akriyah

Sri Bhagavan said:
One, who does his duty without expecting the fruit of actions, is a Sannyasi and a Yogi. One who has merely renounced the sacred fire is not a Sannyasi (renouncer), similarly one who has merely given up all activity not a Yogi.
6.2. yam sanyasam iti prahuh
yogam tam viddhi pandava
nahi chsanyastasan kalpah
yogi bhavati kashechana

Arjuna!. What the people speak of as Sannyasa, know that to be the same as Yoga; for no one can be a Yogi, who has not given up desires.
6.3. arurukshoh muneh yogam
karma karm uchyate
yogarudhasya tasya eva
shamah karanam uchyate

One who desires to achieve the heights of yoga (in the form of equanimity), such studious yogi to do his duty is a reason and for the same person when he is established in Yoga, peace of mind is spoken of as the reason.
6.4. yada hi na indriyarthesha
na karmasu anusajjate
sarvasankalpa sanyasin
yogarudhah tada uchyate

When a person does not have attachment either for the objects of senses or for actions and has renounced all desires of the world, he is said to have attained Yoga.
5-9. Identification of perfect follower of Karm Yoga and inspiration for salvation
.
6.5. udharet atmana atmanama
na atmanam avasadayeta
atma eva hi atmanah bandhuh
atma eva ripuh atmanah.

One should lift himself up by own efforts and should not degrade himself because one's own self is his own friend, and one's own self is his own enemy.
6.6. bandhuh atma atmahan tasya
ten atma eva atmana
tijah anatmanah tu shatrutve
nartet atma eva shatruvat

One who has conquered himself is the brother of his own self and who has not conquered himself soul of such of such person behaves inimically like an enemy.
6.7.Jitatmanah prashamtasya
Paramatma samahitah
Shitosnasukhduhkhashu
Tatha manapranayo.

One who has attained victory over himself, Almighty is always available to such person unaffected by heat-cold (favorable-unfavorable), pleasure-sorrow and honor-insult
6.8.gyanvigyana triptatma
kutastha vijitendriyah
yuktah iti uchyate
yogi samalosthasma kanchanah
One whose mind is saturated with knowledge and science, who is strictly unaffected, conquered senses of objects and looks clod, stone or gold equally, such a yogi is called established yogi.
6.9. shuhrin mitraryudasina
madhyasthadveshayabandhushu
sadhushu api cha papeshu
samabudhih vishisyate
One, who regards well-wishers, friends, foes, neutrals, mediators, objects of hatred, relatives, the virtuous and the sinful alike, such person is supreme.
10-15 Procedure of positioning for meditation and description of Shaping image with quality

6.10. Yogi yunjita satatam
atmanam rahasi sthitah
ekaki yatchittatma
nirashih aparigrabah


A Yogi who has disciplined his mind and body, and free from desires and bereft of possessions should constantly engage his mind in mediation, living in seclusion all by himself alone.
6.11.shuchau deshe pratisthapya
sthiram asanam atmanah
na atiyuchhitam na atinecham
chailajin kushottarama

On a clean place neither very high nor very low establishing his seat with Kusa grass, a deerskin and a cloth spread thereon one below another (Kusa below, deerskin in the middle and cloth uppermost),.
6.12 tatra ekagram manah
kritva yatchitendriyamkriyah
upvishvayasane yunjyat
yogan atma vishudhyate
And sitting on that seat, concentrating the mind and controlling the functions of the mind and the senses, he should practise Yoga for his inner-purification.
6.13. samam kayashirogreenam
dharyana achalam sthirah
samprekshya nasikagram
svamdishah cha anavalokayan
.
Keeping the trunk, head and neck sit straight and steady, remaining firm and looking at the tip of his nose, without looking in other directions.
6.14. prashantatma vigatbhin
brahma chariurate sthitah
manah sanyamya macchittah
yuktah asita matparah
One who has peaceful inner, fearless and pledged to the vow of continence, such meditator should sit concentrating on Me controlling his mind thoroughly.
6.15. yunjan evam sada
atmanama yogi niyatmanasah,
shantin nirvana parmam
matsanstham adhigachhati

Thus a Yogi of disciplined mind constantly applying his mind in Me in this way, attains the supreme salvating Peace that rests in Me.
16-23 Detailing meditation for shape, rules and consequences
6.16 na ati ashranatah tu yogah
astina chha ekantam anaschanatah
na cha ati swapnashilasya
jagratah na eva cha arjuna

Arjuna! This Yoga is not meant for a person, who eats too much or who does not eat at all also this is not for the person who sleeps too much or who never sleeps.
6.17.yuktaharviharasya
yuktachestasyakarmshu
yuktaswapnavbodhasya
yogah bhavati cluhkhah

Yoga that destroys all the woes cvan only be accomplished by those who take reasonable food and recreation, regular in performing reasonable actions, and so in regulated sleeping and waking.
6.18. yada viniyatam chittam
atmani eva avatisthate
nihsprih sarva kamebhyah
yuktah iti uchyatetada
The mind brought under discipline when stablises in its own image and becomes unattached from all the worldly matters at that time “he is Yogi” it is said.
6.19. yatha deepah nivatasthah
na ingate saupma smrita
yoginah yatchitsya
yunjat yogan atmanah.
For example a flame of lamp becomes unvibrating in a place protected from the flow of wind; similarly the disciplined mind of a yogi becomes stable practicing yoga.
6.20. yatra uparmate chittam
niruddham yoga sevaya yatra
cha ena atmana atmanam
pashyam atmani tushyati
. The stage in which the disciplined mind is set at rest through practice of Yoga and the stage in which one looking within ownself realizes self satisfaction.
6.21.sukam atyantikam yat
tata buddhigrahyam atindriyam
vetri yat nacha ayam
sthitah chalati tatnatah
The pleasure which is absolute,supersensitive and acceptable to mind and experienced at whatever stage and a Dhyan Yogi established in such pleasure never derails from the substance.

6.22. yam labdhava cha aparam
labham manyate na adhikama tatah
yasmin stithah na duhkhena
guruna api vichalyate
.
And having obtained such advantage after which he does not reckon any other gain as greater than that, and established in which he is never moved even by great sorrows.
6.23. tat vidyat chchkhah sanyoguiyogam,
yoga samagyiytam
sah nishchayena yokatavhay
yogah aniruidda chetsah
The stage where there is relinquishment of combination of pains that state is called Yoga, that Yoga should be resolutely practised without fault and with an unwearied mind.
24-28.Meditation of quality less and shapeless images with consequences
6.24. samkalpprabhavana kamana
tyaktua sarvan asheshatah
manasa eva indriyagramam
viviyama samantatah.

Renouncing all the desires arising out of necessities completely, and fully controlling the senses from all sides by the mind,
6.25.sanaih sanaih uparmeya
buddhaya ghritigrihitaya
atmasamstham manah kritua
na kinchit api chintayeta
.

One should gradually relinquish worldly desires using mind with patience and establish the mind and thoughts in the Almighty God through reason and then should not think of anything else.
6.26. yatah yatah rishacharati manals
chamchalam asthiram
tatah tatah niyamya etat
atmani eva vasham naxeta.

Controlling the unstable and tinger mind by replacing that from all those objects after which it runs, one should exactly concentrate it on God.
6.27. prashnatmanasam hi enam
yoginam sukham uttamam
upaiti shanta rajasam
brahma bhutam akalmasham

one whose all the sins have been destroyed, whose passion for superlative worldly objects has been calm down and mind has attained total peace such Yogi to be identified with the Bramha certainly and he gets all the substantial pleasures.,
6.28. yunjannevam sadatmanam
yogi vigatkalmashah
sukhena brahmasaushparsham
atyantam sukham ashrute

The sinless Yogi thus involving himself in the Almighty for ever experiences absolute pleasure like oneness with Brahma.
29-32. Feelings experienced through Meditation
6.29. sarvabhutastham atmanam
sarvabhutani cha atmani
ikshate yoga yuktatma
sarvatra samadarshanah

A Sankhya Yogi viewing own identity everywhere with meditational inner looks his own image framed in all the living creatures and sees all the creatures within his own shape.
6.30. yah mam pashyato sarvatra
sarvam cha may pashyati
tasya aham na pranasyami
sahcha me na pranashyati


A follower who views Me (the Almighty) present in all beings, and sees all beings in Me, I never disappear from his view nor is he ever out sight of Me.
6.31. Sarvabhutasthitam yah mamabhajati
ekatvam asthitah
samvatha vartmanah api sah
yogi mayi uartate
.

One who, establishes himself in sense of unity, worships Me as existing in all beings, that worshiping Yogi, though doing in all forms of activities, dwells in Me.
6.32. atmaupamyena sarvatra samam
pashyati yah arjuna
sukham na yadi va
duhkham sah yogi param matah

Arjuna! He who views me equally everywhere like his own body and also looks upon the pleasure and pain of all with a similar eye, such a person is absolute Yogi.
33-36 Controlling mind
Arjuna Uvacha
6.33. yah ayam yogah thaya
proktah samyena madhusudhan
etasys ahaum na pasyam
chauchaltivat sthitim sthiram.


Arjuna said:
Krisna! the Yoga in the form of equanimity, which You have described, a stability cannot be perceived owing to tendency of restlessness of mind.
6.34. chanchalam hi manah Krishna
pramathi balwat dridham
tasya aham nigraham
manya vayoh eva suduskaran

Krisna! For, the tendency of mind is very unsteady, turbulent, tenacious and powerful; therefore, I consider it extremly difficult to control just like controlling the wind.
Shri bhagvan uvacha
6.35. ashamsayam mahabaho manah
durnigraham cholama
abhyasena tu kaunteya
vairagyena cha grihyate

Sri Bhagavan said:
Oh Arjun! It is right that mind is unsteady and difficult to control, but it can be controlled through practice (of meditation) and detachment.
6.36. asanyatmana yogah dusprapyah
eti me matin
vashyatmana tu yatata
shakyah avaptum upayatah

Yoga is difficult to attain for one whose mind is not disciplened by him, however, one who has the mind under control, and trying intellectually, can be easily attain through practice; such is My conviction.
37-47 Consequences of contravention of Yoga Rules and Glory of persons involved in devotion
Arjuna uvacha
6.37. ayatin shradhaya upatah
yogat chalitmanasah
aprapya yogsamsidhim kama
gatim krishna gachhati

Arjuna asked:
Krisna! One who, though with full faith do practice, but whose attempt is slack, if he is derailed in the last, fails to achieve perfection;then what will be his destination?
6.38. kanchit na ubhayavibhrastah
chhinabhram eva nashyati
apratisthah mahabahoh vimudhah
brahmanah pathi



Krisna!, Thus derailed from yoga path and without worldly support thus corruted from both the sides, will he not perish like a torn cloud?
6.39. etat me shanshayam krishna
chettum arhasi aseshatah
tvadanyah sanshayasya asya
chetta na hi upapadhyate

Krisna! You are only able to destroy this doubt of mine completely; for none other than You can be found, who can dispel this doubt.
Sri Bhagvanuvach
6.40.parth na eva ih na
amutra vinashah tasya vidhyate
ha hi kalyankrita kashita
durgatim tat gachhati.

Sri Bhagavan said:
Arjuna! That person is neither lost on this earth nor hereinafter. For whoever works for welfare never meets evil consequences.
6.41. prapya pundya kritam lokan
ushitha shashvathi samah
shuchinam shrimatam gehe
yogabrasthah abhijayate


One who has derailed from Yoga, reaches higher worlds to which persons of meritorious deeds are entitled, and after living there for many years, borns in the house of pious and gentle man.
6.42. athava yoginama eva
kule bhavati dhimatama
eta hi durlabhtaram
loke janma yat iddrisham

Otherwise a derailed yogi (who has renounced world) will born in the family of enlightened Yogis; but this kind of birth is extremely difficult to attain in this world.
6.43.tatra tam buddhisanyogam
labhate pauruadehikam
yatate cha tato bhuyah
san sidhau kurunandanam

Arjuna! There he regains all the ways and means of his previous human life ; and through that he resumes, with greater vigour than before, for perfection.
6.44. purvabhyasena tainena
hriyate hi avashah api sah
jigyasuh api yogasya
shabdabrahma ativartate
.

That derailed yogi, who borns in a gentleman family, though subject to the senses, feels attached towards Almighty God by force of his practice done in the previous life. Because the seeker of the Yoga of equanimity also tresspasses the actions performed with motive as laid down in the Vedas.
6.45. prayatnat yatmanah tu yogi
sanshuddhakilvishah
anekajanmasansiddhah
yati param gatim

But The Yogi, who deligently takes up the practice and whose sins have been destroyed attaining perfection through many births, he attains the salvation.
6.46.tapasvibhyah adhikah yogi
gyanibhyah api matah adhikah
karmibhyah cha adhikah yogi
tasmat yogi bhava arjuna


A Yogi is superior to the ascetics( invoved in attachments); I think he is superior also even to wise persons and to those who perform actions. Therefore, be a Yogi.
6.47. yoginam api sarvesham
madgatena antaratmana
shradhavan bhajate yah mama
soh me yuktatamah matah

Even among all Yogis, he who faithfully worships Me with mind completely involved in Me is considered by Me to be a best Yogi.
